December 10th, Human Rights Day
Human Rights Day is celebrated on December 10th of each year.
Human Rights Day was established in 1948 to honor the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is on this day that the United Nations Prizes for Human Rights are awarded.
As one might expect this is also a day of many high level political conferences and cultural events and exhibitions dealing with human rights issues are hosted. The United Nations headquarters in New York city hosts an entire day's worth of forums. They invite speakers from around the world to discuss a plethora of issues. The most recent commemoration focused on the topic of “poverty” and its violations of human rights.
